Arithmetical properties of a sequence arising from an arctangent sum

The sequence {xn} defined by xn = (n+ xn−1)/(1 − nxn−1), with x1 = 1, appeared in the context of some arctangent sums. We establish the fact that xn = 0 for n 4 and conjecture that xn is not an integer for n 5. This conjecture is given a combinatorial interpretation in terms of Stirling numbers via the elementary symmetric functions. The problem features linkage with a well-known conjecture on ...

On Isospectral Arithmetical Spaces

We study the relationship between the arithmetic and the spectrum of the Laplacian for manifolds arising from congruent arithmetic subgroups of SL(1, D), where D is an indefinite quaternion division algebra defined over a number field F . We give new examples of isospectral but non-isometric compact, arithmetically defined varieties, generalizing the class of examples constructed by Vigneras. T...

Computing Bounds from Arithmetical Proofs

We explore the role of the function a + 2, and its generalizations to higher number classes, in providing complexity bounds for the provably computable functions across a broad spectrum of theories, based on a “predicative” induction scheme and ranging in strength between polynomial-time arithmetic and Π11-CA0. The resulting “fast-growing” sub-recursive hierarchy forges a direct link between pr...

Harrington’s results on arithmetical singletons

We exposit two previously unpublished results due to Leo Harrington. The first result says that there exist arithmetical singletons which are arithmetically incomparable. The second result says that there exists a ranked point which is not an arithmetical singleton.

Arithmetical Knowledge and Arithmetical Definability: Four Studies

by Sean Walsh The subject of this dissertation is arithmetical knowledge and arithmetical definability. The first two chapters contain respectively a critique of a logicist account of a preferred means by which we may legitimately infer to arithmetical truths and a tentative defense of an empiricist account. According to the logicist account, one may infer from quasi-logical truths to patently ...
